Although people aren't that familiar with this type of banking, there has been a negative image presented to most North Americans. Believe it or not, most people would benefit from having an account in offshore banks. First off, North Americans have this false sense of security in regards to their own financial institutions and in fact offshore banks are more secure and better managed than what exists in North America. That's due in part to the fact that foreign banks have a higher ratio of liquid assets to accumulated debts. Also, many of these institutions are backed by hard currency and not by the debt based money of North America. If one was to examine the top 50 banks in the world, Canada would not even rank and the US might have one or two on the list. Many offshore banks have been around for hundreds of years. There are many advantages indeed to having an offshore banking account as part of your portfolio but you must understand how to use it properly so that it fits in with your respective countries laws.
