So you've decided to try the financing option at the dealership.
Many people do get a car loan from the dealership, but make sure you check all your other options first. Some other options are the banks, credit unions, and more recently, an online car loan. It's good if you can get pre-approved before you hit the showroom floor, because then you know exactly how much you can spend.
Bottom line, no matter where you get your car loan from -- know your numbers. Be sure, every step of the way that you know just how much you are paying, when, how and what for! No exceptions!
Know your contract!
Read -- and be sure you understand -- every word of every document you sign or initial. No exceptions.
Sign nothing unless you understand what it is, make sure every 'i' is dotted and every 't' is crossed and there are no blanks left. Make sure any changes to the basic contracts are signed or initialed by both parties.
Remember, car salespeople negotiate car loans with people like you every day. Unfortunately, you may only negotiate one car deal in your life. So the salesperson has had lots more practice than you. So…'always be prepared'. Uncertainty is your enemy, and salespeople are experienced at recognizing and using it. Know exactly how much you can spend, and stick to it.
